Yarn-Embellished 'Patches' Tote- Part 5

Applying a length of silk gauze...

...to the top portion of the project...

...(as later reinforcement for the straps).

                                                          Covering side one...

                                                 ...with layers of wool roving.

                                                  After wetting the project out...

                                                     ...it's turned to side two...

...and the application of silk gauze and wool...

                                                            ...are repeated.

                                                       Side two is wetted out...

                                                   ...and the felting continues...

...until the resist can safely be removed.

                                                 Next time: rolling and rubbing.

Yarn-Embellished 'Patches' Tote- Part 4

The embellished nuno pre-felt...

...is wrapped around a foam resist...

...and the overlapping seam and bottom edge...

                                                    ...are quickly hand-basted.

                                               The project is turned inside-out...

...and the excess nuno pre-felt at the bottom of the tote...

                                                         ...is trimmed away.

                                                            The foam resist...

...is then re-inserted into the pre-felt envelope.

Next time: I add additional silk and wool to the project.

Yarn-Embellished 'Patches' Tote- Part 3

It took several weeks...

                                                              ...but slowly...

                                                               ...over time...

...I covered the whole of the pre-felt...

                                                        ...with hand-stitching...

...in various colors of wool yarn.

The process was actually quite meditative...

...and I think that the back side of the project...

                                                      ...looks nearly as pretty...

                                                   ...when stitched like this...

...as the decorative fabric front! :)

Next time: I enclose a resist!

Yarn-Embellished 'Patches' Tote- Part 2

Laying out one layer from a bright orange batt...

                                                 ...followed by a second layer.

Placing pieces of plain and patterned silk on the wool surface...

                                                  ...wetting the project out...

...and covering it with clear painter's plastic.

Felting the piece to the pre-felt stage.

                                              The finished and dried pre-felt...

...and its 'fraternal twin' from my last post. ;)

Next time: stitching with wool yarn!

Yarn-Embellished 'Patches' Tote- Part 1

Laying out one layer of wool in disparate colors...

...and covering it with a perpendicular layer of other, unrelated shades.

                                                     Wetting the piece out...

...and applying 'patches' of silk and cotton fabric...

                                                     ...to the project surface.

A layer of thin, painter's plastic is used to cover the layout...

...and a sander is employed to 'get the ball rolling'.

Once the project reaches the pre-felt stage...

                                                  ...the water is squeezed out...

                                                    ...and it's allowed to dry.

Next time: a second large fabric and wool piece is created.

'Love Wins' Table Runner- Part 3

Once the project is dry...

...each short end is carefully trimmed...

...leaving an overlapping bit of silk gauze.

The long ends are also trimmed...

                                                  ...to form a neat rectangle.

The runner is placed on a length of solar pool cover...

...and the silk gauze is folded to the back on each short end.

                                                     The project is wetted out...

                                                      ...and felting begins anew.

                                                       Mid-way through felting...

...the inclusions are beginning to crinkle...

                                              ...and become delightfully textural.

The front of the finished piece...

                                                           ...and the back.

                                                                Close-ups...

...of the pre-felt pieces, crinkly silk gauze and inclusions.

This runner was created as a gift...

...for the wedding of a wonderful friend of mine...

                                                    ...and his long-term partner.

                                                  Congratulations, you two...

...here's wishing you a lifetime of love...

                                                           ...and great joy!
