"Two-Fer" Pencil Roving Hat- Part 1 of 2

Strands of pencil roving...

...are applied to the surface of the resist.

A thin layer of merino roving tops the design...

...followed by a second, perpendicular layer.

                                                    Wetting out the piece...

...and flipping it to side two.

                                               As a blending experiment...

...(and also to add a little blue to the primarily red side)...

...I add a small blob of turquoise roving...

...to the second layer of wool on side two.

                                                       Wetting out the hat...

...and folding in the pencil roving 'extensions'.

                                              After some rubbing and rolling...

...it's time to remove the resist.

Because different shades of pencil roving overlap...

...there's a bit of color blending here, as well.

                                                    Mid-way through felting...

...the hat is nearing its finished shape and size.

                                                    Next time: the completed hat!
